Abstract

Hereditary diseases are passed down through familial lines, meaning they are inherited from parents to their offspring. The purpose of this study is to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice towards family history of hereditary diseases among undergraduate students of Afe Babalola University in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti state. The respondents involve undergraduates in the College of Medical and Health Science and Social and Management Science across 200 level to 400 level. The research designed adopted in this study is cross-sectional quantitative design. A multi semi structured, pre tested questionnaire was used to collect data. About two thirds of the study participants (65.4%) know their family medical history. Also, majority of the study participants (82.9%) are aware of the lifestyle changes that can improve their health regarding these diseases. diseases are/were present in their family. 7.8% have conducted research on their family medical history. The findings of this study reveal a generally high level of awareness among the participants regarding the importance of family medical history and its impact on personal health. A significant proportion demonstrated knowledge about the role of family medical history in disease risk, early detection, and lifestyle modification, with many expressing a willingness to undergo preventive screenings and make health-related changes to mitigate risk.  However, the study also highlights key gaps between awareness and action. While many participants acknowledge the value of family medical history, a relatively smaller proportion have taken concrete steps such as undergoing screenings, making lifestyle changes, or conducting in-depth research. This indicates a need for more targeted interventions and education that not only raise awareness but also encourage and facilitate practical health behaviors.
